In the latest data from the Official Journal of Patents and Designs, key insights on patent applications, publications, and grants from 4th to 11th August 2023 were unveiled by BananaIP Counsels, a leading Intellectual Property firm in India.

Patent Statistics Overview:

  • Total patent applications this week: 884 (Early publications: 379, Ordinary publications: 505)
  • Patent examination increased by 38.6%, standing at 524.
  • Patent grants decreased slightly by 12.39% to 1,435 applications.

Breakdown by City – Early Publications:

  • Delhi: Increase of 39.44% (180 to 251)
  • Mumbai: Drop of 17.14% (105 to 87)
  • Chennai: Surge of 442.85% (7 to 38)
  • Kolkata: No changes, reporting 3 publications.

Ordinary Publications by City:

  • Delhi: 35.54% increase (256 to 347)
  • Mumbai: 25.53% hike (47 to 59)
  • Chennai: 35.38% rise (65 to 88)
  • Kolkata: Surge of 266.66% (3 to 11).

First Examination Report (FER) Distribution:

  • Delhi: 201
  • Mumbai: 100
  • Chennai: 182
  • Kolkata: 41.

Publications Under Grant by City:

  • Delhi witnessed a 13.76% decline (712 to 614)
  • Mumbai saw a decrease of 15.03% (266 to 226)
  • Chennai observed a slight decrease of 9.20% (500 to 454)
  • Kolkata reported a drop of 11.87% (160 to 141).

Of the 884 patent applications, the top contributing cities are:

  • Delhi: 33
  • Mumbai: 19

  • Early publications: 14,438
  • Ordinary publications: 18,430
  • Total applications published: 32,870
  • Total grants: 28,769 (Delhi: 11,574, Mumbai: 4,623, Chennai: 9,387, Kolkata: 3,185)
  • Applications examined: 16,894.

Industrial Design Statistics:

  • 324 designs registered this week, increased from 314 the previous week.
  • Total designs registered in 2023: 19,067.
