Weekly Patent and Industrial Design Statistics – 30th June 2023 to 7th July 2023

BananaIP Counsels, one of India’s preeminent Intellectual Property firms, has released the latest statistics from the Official Journal of Patents and Designs for the week of 30th June to 7th July 2023.

Indian Patent Statistics Overview

Published in the 27th issue of the Patent Journal for 2023, there were 750 patent applications. This consists of 376 early publications and 374 ordinary publications. This week, there was a notable increase in both patent examinations, of 312.64% to 359 applications as well as total grants, of about 18.45% to 1,239 applications.

Changes in Early Publications

Early publications in Delhi rose slightly by 6.95%, from 230 to 246. Conversely, Mumbai saw a decrease of 84.69%, a fall from 98 to 15. Likewise, Chennai reported a 71.77% decrease, shifting from 326 to 92. Lastly, Kolkata experienced a 64.28% hike, ascending from 14 to 23. Overall, there was a drop of 43.71% in total early publications, descending from 668 to 376.

Variations in Ordinary Publications

The ordinary publications in Delhi increased by 95.34%, moving from 129 to 252. On the other hand, the number of ordinary publications notably decreased in all other Jurisdictions. Mumbai saw a decrease of 81.28%, shifting from 203 to 38 applications. Chennai had a huge drop by 88.13% from 666 to 79. Likewise, Kolkata saw a decrease of 73.68%, dropping from 19 to 5. Consequently, there was a 63.22% downfall in total ordinary publications from 1,017 to 374.

The total publications for this week were 750, marking a 55.48% decrease from the previous week’s total of 1,685.

First Examination Report (FER) Statistics

This week, 359 FERs were issued. The city-wise distribution of FERs included 130 in Delhi, 70 in Mumbai, 136 in Chennai, and 23 in Kolkata.

Changes in Publications Under Grant

The number of publications under grant increased in all jurisdictions. Delhi reported a rise of 19.00% from 421 to 501, Mumbai had a 25.65% hike from 152 to 191, Chennai saw a 13.49% increase from 363 to 412, and Kolkata registered a 22.72% growth from 110 to 135 grants. Correspondingly, the total number of publications under grant increased by 18.45%, from 1,046 to 1,239.

Analysis of Applications Based on 'Applicant City'

A detailed look into the 750 patent applications published this week reveals that the majority came from seven major Indian cities – Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Kolkata. These cities together contributed a total of 114 applications. The distribution is as follows:

  •     Delhi: 26 applications
  •     Mumbai: 19 applications
  •     Pune: 13 applications
  •     Bangalore: 17 applications
  •     Chennai: 17 applications
  •     Hyderabad: 21 applications
  •     Kolkata: 1 application

Yearly Overview of Patent Statistics

The period from 1st January 2023 to 7th July 2023 observed:

  •     A total of 13,152 early publications
  •     16,389 ordinary publications
  •     The publication of 29,543 applications
  •     Grant of 8,893 patents in Delhi, 3,612 in Mumbai, 7,221 in Chennai, and 2,464 in Kolkata, making a total of 22,190 grants.
  •     15,040 applications were examined during this period.

Indian Industrial Design Statistics

In the realm of Industrial Design, the design office registered a total of 462 designs this week. This brings the total number of designs registered since the beginning of the year to 17,430. This is a notable increase from the 355 designs registered last week.
