Weekly Patent and Industrial Design Statistics – 7th July 2023 to 14th July 2023

BananaIP Counsels, one of India’s preeminent Intellectual Property firms, has released the latest statistics from the Official Journal of Patents and Designs for the week of 7th to 14th July 2023.

Indian Patent Statistics Overview

Published in the 28th issue of the Patent Journal for 2023, there were 508 patent applications. This consists of 98 early publications and 410 ordinary publications. This week, there was a notable decrease in both patent examinations, of 13.09% to 312 applications as well as total grants, of about 8.63% to 1,132 applications.

Changes in Early Publications

Early publications in Delhi saw a decrease of 65.44%, a fall from 246 to 85. Likewise, Chennai reported a 85.86% decrease, shifting from 92 to 13. In case of Mumbai and Kolkata jurisdictions, there were no early publications this week. Overall, there was a drop of 73.93% in total early publications, descending from 376 to 98.

Variations in Ordinary Publications

The ordinary publications in Delhi increased by 13.49%, moving from 252 to 286. On the other hand, Mumbai saw a decrease of 13.15%, shifting from 38 to 33 applications. Ordinary publication in the remaining jurisdictions saw an increase. Chennai had an increase of 6.32% from 79 to 84 and similarly Kolkata saw an increase of 40.00%, moving from 5 to 7. Consequently, there was a 9.62% increase in total ordinary publications from 374 to 410.

The total publications for this week were 508, marking a 32.26% decrease from the previous week’s total of 750.

First Examination Report (FER) Statistics

This week, 312 FERs were issued. The city-wise distribution of FERs included 105 in Delhi, 84 in Mumbai, 100 in Chennai, and 23 in Kolkata.

Changes in Publications Under Grant

The number of publications under grant decreased in all jurisdictions. Delhi reported a drop of 14.77% from 501 to 427, Mumbai had a 8.37% fall from 191 to 175, Chennai saw a 2.66% decrease from 412 to 401, and Kolkata registered a 4.44% drop from 135 to 129 grants. Correspondingly, the total number of publications under grant decreased by 8.63%, from 1,239 to 1,132.

Analysis of Applications Based on 'Applicant City'

A detailed look into the 508 patent applications published this week reveals that the majority came from seven major Indian cities – Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Kolkata. These cities together contributed a total of 73 applications. The distribution is as follows:

  •     Delhi: 12 applications
  •     Mumbai: 9 applications
  •     Pune: 5 applications
  •     Bangalore: 21 applications
  •     Chennai: 18 applications
  •     Hyderabad: 6 applications
  •     Kolkata: 2 applications.

Yearly Overview of Patent Statistics

The period from 1st January 2023 to 14th July 2023 observed:

  •     A total of 13,250 early publications
  •     16,799 ordinary publications
  •     The publication of 30,051 applications
  •     Grant of 9,320 patents in Delhi, 3,787 in Mumbai, 7,622 in Chennai, and 2,593 in Kolkata, making a total of 23,322 grants.
  •     15,352 applications were examined during this period.

Indian Industrial Design Statistics

In the realm of Industrial Design, the design office registered a total of 359 designs this week. This brings the total number of designs registered since the beginning of the year to 17,789. This is a notable increase from the 462 designs registered last week.
