Weekly Patent and Industrial Design Statistics – 23rd June 2023 to 30th June 2023

BananaIP Counsels, one of India’s preeminent Intellectual Property firms, has released the latest statistics from the Official Journal of Patents and Designs for the week of 23rd to 30th June 2023.

Indian Patent Statistics Overview

Published in the 26th issue of the Patent Journal for 2023, there were 1,685 patent applications. This consists of 668 early publications and 1,017 ordinary publications. This week, there was a significant decrease in patent examination, of 70.90% to 87 applications. However, there was a notable increase in total grants this week, of about 125.43% to 1,046 applications.

Changes in Early Publications

Early publications in Delhi drastically reduced by 13.53%, from 266 to 230. Conversely, Mumbai saw an increase of 96.00%, rising from 50 to 98. Likewise, Chennai reported a 63.00% increase, shifting from 200 to 326. Lastly, Kolkata experienced a 133.33% hike, ascending from 6 to 14. Overall, there was an increase of 27.96% in total early publications, rising from 522 to 668.

Variations in Ordinary Publications

The ordinary publications in Delhi and Mumbai increased by 4.03% and 174.32% respectively, moving from 124 to 129 and 74 to 203. Chennai had the highest rise, soaring by 489.38% from 113 to 666. Likewise, Kolkata saw an increase of 90.00%, rising from 10 to 19. Consequently, there was a 216.82% surge in total ordinary publications from 321 to 1,017.

The total publications for this week were 1,685, marking a 99.88% increase from the previous week’s total of 843.

First Examination Report (FER) Statistics

This week, 87 FERs were issued. The city-wise distribution of FERs included 25 in Delhi, 23 in Mumbai, 33 in Chennai, and 6 in Kolkata.

Changes in Publications Under Grant

The number of publications under grant increased in all jurisdictions. Delhi reported a rise of 113.70%, Mumbai had a 42.05% hike, Chennai saw a 175.00% increase, and Kolkata registered a 292.85% growth. Correspondingly, the total number of publications under grant increased by 125.43%, from 464 to 1,046.

Analysis of Applications Based on 'Applicant City'

A detailed look into the 1,685 patent applications published this week reveals that the majority came from seven major Indian cities – Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Kolkata. These cities together contributed a total of 350 applications. The distribution is as follows:

  • Delhi: 69 applications
  • Mumbai: 41 applications
  • Pune: 29 applications
  • Bangalore: 98 applications
  • Chennai: 63 applications
  • Hyderabad: 47 applications
  • Kolkata: 3 applications.

Yearly Overview of Patent Statistics

The period from 1st January 2023 to 30th June 2023 observed:

  • A total of 12,776 early publications
  • 16,015 ordinary publications
  • The publication of 28,793 applications
  • Grant of 8,392 patents in Delhi, 3,421 in Mumbai, 6,809 in Chennai, and 2,329 in Kolkata, making a total of 20,951 grants.
  • 14,681 applications were examined during this period.

Indian Industrial Design Statistics

In the realm of Industrial Design, the design office registered a total of 355 designs this week. This brings the total number of designs registered since the beginning of the year to 16,968. This is a notable increase from the 288 designs registered last week.
