Weekly Patent and Industrial Design Statistics – 21st July 2023 to 28th July 2023

BananaIP Counsels, one of India’s preeminent Intellectual Property firms, has released the latest statistics from the Official Journal of Patents and Designs for the week of 21st to 28th July 2023.

Indian Patent Statistics Overview

Published in the 30th issue of the Patent Journal for 2023, there were 520 patent applications. This consists of 178 early publications and 342 ordinary publications. This week, there was a notable increase in both patent examinations of 50.98% to 385 applications as well as in patent grants of 6.97% to 1,227 applications.

Changes in Early Publications

Early publications this week in Delhi dropped by 65.92%, shifting from 314 to 107. On the other hand, Mumbai reported a huge increase of 825.00%, rising from 4 to 37. Likewise, Chennai saw a 126.66 % increase, rising from 15 to 34 applications. There were no early publications in Kolkata this week, which is a drop from 3 to 0 applications. Overall, there was a decline of 47.02% in total early publications, descending from 336 to 178.

Variations in Ordinary Publications

The ordinary publications this week declined in all four jurisdictions. Delhi saw a decrease of 21.45%, a fall from 261 to 205 and Mumbai recorded a decrease of 13.72% from 51 to 44. Similarly, Chennai saw a decline of 5.10% from 98 to 93 and in case of Kolkata, there were no ordinary publications this week, marking a drop from 3 to 0. As a result, total ordinary publications declined by 17.19%, decreasing from 413 to 342.

The total publications for this week were 520, marking a 30.57% decrease from the previous week’s total of 749.

First Examination Report (FER) Statistics

This week, 385 FERs were issued. The city-wise distribution of FERs included 145 in Delhi, 88 in Mumbai, 130 in Chennai, and 22 in Kolkata.

Changes in Publications Under Grant

The number of publications under grant in Delhi saw a drop of 21.19% from 519 to 409. On the other hand, the number of grants increased in all other jurisdictions. Mumbai had a rise of 30.87% from 149 to 195 and Chennai registered a 32.37% increase from 349 to 462 grants. Lastly, Kolkata reported a 23.84% rise from 130 to 161. Consequently, the total number of publications under grant increased by 6.97%, from 1,147 to 1,227.

Analysis of Applications Based on 'Applicant City'

A detailed look into the 520 patent applications published this week reveals that the majority came from seven major Indian cities – Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Kolkata. These cities together contributed a total of 118 applications. The distribution is as follows:

  •     Delhi: 28 applications
  •     Mumbai: 22 applications
  •     Pune:11 applications
  •     Bangalore: 39 applications
  •     Chennai: 12 applications
  •     Hyderabad: 6 applications
  •     Kolkata: 0 application.

Yearly Overview of Patent Statistics

The period from 1st January 2023 to 28th July 2023 observed:

  •     A total of 13,764 early publications
  •     17,554 ordinary publications
  •     The publication of 31,320 applications
  •     Grant of 10,248 patents in Delhi, 4,131 in Mumbai, 8,433 in Chennai, and 2,884 in Kolkata, making a total of 25,696 grants.
  •     15,992 applications were examined during this period.

Indian Industrial Design Statistics

In the realm of Industrial Design, the design office registered a total of 331 designs this week. This brings the total number of designs registered since the beginning of the year to 18,429. This is a notable increase from the 309 designs registered last week.
