Weekly Patent and Industrial Design Statistics – 14th July 2023 to 21st July 2023

BananaIP Counsels, one of India’s preeminent Intellectual Property firms, has released the latest statistics from the Official Journal of Patents and Designs for the week of 14th to 21st July 2023.

Indian Patent Statistics Overview

Published in the 29th issue of the Patent Journal for 2023, there were 749 patent applications. This consists of 336 early publications and 413 ordinary publications. This week, the number of patent applications that were examined was lower by 18.26% to 255 applications from the previous week. However, the total grants this week increased by 1.32% to 1,147 applications.

Changes in Early Publications

Early publications in all the jurisdictions significantly increased. Delhi saw an increase of 269.41%, rising from 85 to 314. Likewise, Chennai reported a 15.38% increase, shifting from 13 to 15. Both in Mumbai and Kolkata, there was a 100% increase from 0 to 4 and 3 applications respectively. Overall, there was a rise of 242.85% in total early publications, ascending from 98 to 336.

Variations in Ordinary Publications

The ordinary publications in Delhi decreased by 8.74%, a fall from 286 to 261. Similarly, Kolkata saw a notable decrease 57.14% shifting from 7 to 3. On the other hand, Mumbai saw an increase of 54.54%, shifting from 33 to 51 applications. And, Chennai as well, had an increase of 16.66% from 84 to 98. Consequently, there was a slight 0.73% increase in total ordinary publications from 410 to 413.

The total publications for this week were 749, marking a 47.44% increase from the previous week’s total of 508.

First Examination Report (FER) Statistics

This week, 255 FERs were issued. The city-wise distribution of FERs included 90 in Delhi, 56 in Mumbai, 90 in Chennai, and 19 in Kolkata.

Changes in Publications Under Grant

The number of publications under grant in Delhi reported a rise of 21.54% from 427 to 519. Similarly, Kolkata had a 0.77% rise from 129 to 130. Whereas Mumbai had a fall of 14.85% from 175 to 149 and Chennai registered a 12.96% drop from 401 to 349 grants. Correspondingly, the total number of publications under grant increased by 1.32%, from 1,132 to 1,147.

Analysis of Applications Based on 'Applicant City'

A detailed look into the 749 patent applications published this week reveals that the majority came from seven major Indian cities – Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Kolkata. These cities together contributed a total of 83 applications. The distribution is as follows:

  •     Delhi: 27 applications
  •     Mumbai: 13 applications
  •     Pune: 8 applications
  •     Bangalore: 17 applications
  •     Chennai: 7 applications
  •     Hyderabad: 7 applications
  •     Kolkata: 4 applications.

Yearly Overview of Patent Statistics

The period from 1st January 2023 to 21st July 2023 observed:

  •     A total of 13,586 early publications
  •     17,212 ordinary publications
  •     The publication of 30,800 applications
  •     Grant of 9,839 patents in Delhi, 3,936 in Mumbai, 7,971 in Chennai, and 2,723 in Kolkata, making a total of 24,469 grants.
  •     15,607 applications were examined during this period.

Indian Industrial Design Statistics

In the realm of Industrial Design, the design office registered a total of 309 designs this week. This brings the total number of designs registered since the beginning of the year to 18,098. This is a notable decrease from the 359 designs registered last week.
