Indian Patent & Design Stats: Weekly Update Aug 25 – Sep 1, 2023

In the latest data from the Official Journal of Patents and Designs, key insights on patent applications, publications, and grants from 25th August to 1st September 2023 were unveiled by BananaIP Counsels, a leading Intellectual Property firm in India.

Patent Statistics Overview:

  • Total patent applications this week: 2,734 (Early publications: 2,207, Ordinary publications: 527)
  • Patent examination increased by 50.19%, standing at 395.
  • Patent grants increased by 20.98% to 1,988 applications.
Breakdown by City – Early Publications:
  • Delhi: Increased by 131% (124 to 287)
  • Mumbai: Surge of 128% (71 to 162)
  • Chennai: Hiked by 4397% (39 to 1754)
  • Kolkata: decreased by 20% (5 to 4).
Ordinary Publications by City:
  • Delhi: 5.86% decline (324 to 305)
  • Mumbai: 80.64% hike (62 to 112)
  • Chennai: 19.14% drop (94 to 76)
  • Kolkata: increased by 580% (5 to 34).
First Examination Report (FER) Distribution:
  • Delhi: 158
  • Mumbai: 81
  • Chennai: 123
  • Kolkata: 33.
Publications Under Grant by City:
  • Delhi witnessed a 22.75% rise (677 to 831)
  • Mumbai saw a decrease of 4.62% (303 to 289)
  • Chennai observed a hike of 30.19% (477 to 621)
  • Kolkata reported a rise of 32.80% (186 to 247).

Of the 2,734 patent applications, the top contributing cities are:

    • Delhi: 40
    • Mumbai: 42
    • Pune: 106
    • Bangalore: 350
    • Chennai: 234
    • Hyderabad: 151
    • Kolkata: 1.

2023 Yearly Patent Overview (1st Jan – 1st Sep):

  • Early publications: 17,217
  • Ordinary publications: 19,864
  • Total applications published: 37,083
  • Total grants: 33,614 (Delhi: 13,627, Mumbai: 5,402, Chennai: 10,848, Kolkata: 3,737)
  • Applications examined: 17,930.

Industrial Design Statistics:

  • 360 designs registered this week, increased from 319 the previous week.
  • Total designs registered in 2023: 20,054.
