BananaIP is pleased to release the 2023 Patent Statistics Report. This document offers a comprehensive overview of patent activities in India, including publications, examinations, grants, and refusals. It compares data from 2019 to 2023 and includes city-wise patent statistics and performance metrics of various patent offices.

Key Insights

The report reveals the following significant trends:

  • Patent Publications: There’s a notable increase in patent publications in 2023, showing a 56% rise since 2019.
  • Patent Grants: The number of patents granted has significantly increased, with a 220% jump in 2023 compared to 2019.
  • Application Refusals: The refusals remained similar until 2022 but increased by 94% in 2023.
  • First Examination Reports: A substantial decrease of 70% in the issuance of First Examination Reports (FERs) was observed in 2023 compared to 2019.
  • City Trends: In 2019 and 2020, Delhi led in patent filings. Post-2021, Bangalore overtook Delhi, recording 3,821 patent applications in 2023. Hyderabad and Pune also showed strong performance with over 1,500 applications each.
