Indian Patent and Design Statistics 2023: Insights for December 22 – 29

In the latest data from the Official Journal of Patents and Designs, key insights on patent applications, publications, and grants from 22nd to 29th of December, 2023 were unveiled by BananaIP Counsels, a leading Intellectual Property firm in India.

Patent Statistics Overview:
  • Total patent applications this week: 1,779 (Early publications: 1,038, Ordinary publications: 741)
  • Patent examination increased by 27.9%, standing at 417.
  • Patent grants saw a decrease of 45.4% with 2,824 applications.
Breakdown by City – Early Publications:
  • Delhi: increased by 579% (93 to 632)
  • Mumbai: dropped by 53.6% (136 to 63)
  • Chennai: declined by 46% (627 to 388)
  • Kolkata: decreased by 64.2% (14 to 5).
Ordinary Publications by City:
  • Delhi: 51.9% drop (627 to 301)
  • Mumbai: 4.8% rise (165 to 173)
  • Chennai: 50.1% decline (467 to 233)
  • Kolkata: decreased by 5.5% (36 to 34)
First Examination Report (FER) Distribution:
  • Delhi: 160
  • Mumbai: 84
  • Chennai: 153
  • Kolkata: 20
Publications Under Grant by City:
  • Delhi witnessed a 46.5% drop (2,299 to 1,229)
  • Mumbai saw a decrease of 36.8% (841 to 531)
  • Chennai observed a drop of 46.4% (1,530 to 819)
  • Kolkata reported a decline of 51.2% (503 to 245)

Industrial Design Statistics:
  • 465 designs registered this week, increased from 428 the previous week.
  • Total designs registered in 2023: 28,324.
