Indian Patent and Design Statistics 2023: Insights for October 27 – November 3

In the latest data from the Official Journal of Patents and Designs, key insights on patent applications, publications, and grants from 27th of October to 3rd November 2023 were unveiled by BananaIP Counsels, a leading Intellectual Property firm in India.

Patent Statistics Overview:

  • Total patent applications this week: 399 (Early publications: 148, Ordinary publications: 251)
  • Patent examination decreased by 32.59%, standing at 242.
  • Patent grants saw an increase of 66.86% with 2,583 applications.
Breakdown by City – Early Publications:
  • Delhi: Decreased by 71.62% (74 to 21)
  • Mumbai: Drop of 92% (100 to 8)
  • Chennai: increased by 8.69% (92 to 100)
  • Kolkata: decreased by 26.92% (26 to 19).
Ordinary Publications by City:
  • Delhi: 83.9% decrease (466 to 75)
  • Mumbai: 43.61% drop (94 to 53)
  • Chennai: 8.91% fall (101 to 92)
  • Kolkata: declined by 59.21% (76 to 31)
First Examination Report (FER) Distribution:
  • Delhi: 74
  • Mumbai: 56
  • Chennai: 98
  • Kolkata: 14
Publications Under Grant by City:
  • Delhi witnessed a 75.43% hike (688 to 1207)
  • Mumbai saw an increase of 68.35% (237 to 399)
  • Chennai observed a rise of 60% (436 to 698)
  • Kolkata reported an increase of 49.19% (187 to 279)
Applications Based on ‘Applicant City’:

Of the 399 patent applications, the top contributing cities are:

  • Delhi: 3

  • Early publications: 32,946
  • Ordinary publications: 28,302
  • Total applications published: 61,250
  • Total grants: 49,396 (Delhi: 20,643, Mumbai: 7,885, Chennai: 15,375, Kolkata: 5,493)
  • Applications examined: 21,287.

Industrial Design Statistics:

  • 560 designs registered this week, increased from 533 the previous week.
  • Total designs registered in 2023: 24,619.
