Indian Patent and Design Statistics 2023: Insights for October 13 – 20

In the latest data from the Official Journal of Patents and Designs, key insights on patent applications, publications, and grants from 13th to 20th of October 2023 were unveiled by BananaIP Counsels, a leading Intellectual Property firm in India.

Patent Statistics Overview:

  • Total patent applications this week: 1,840 (Early publications: 830, Ordinary publications: 1,010)
  • Patent examination decreased by 4.2%, standing at 291.
  • Patent grants saw an increase of 10% with 1,945 applications.
Breakdown by City – Early Publications:
  • Delhi: Decreased by 59.59% (594 to 240)
  • Mumbai: Drop of 28.15% (238 to 171)
  • Chennai: Hiked by 120% (158 to 349)
  • Kolkata: decreased by 43.54% (124 to 70).

Ordinary Publications by City:

  • Delhi: 20.52% increase (419 to 505)
  • Mumbai: 51.31% rise (76 to 115)
  • Chennai: 60% surge (170 to 272)
  • Kolkata: decreased by 54.08% (257 to 118)

First Examination Report (FER) Distribution:

  • Delhi: 91
  • Mumbai: 95
  • Chennai: 94
  • Kolkata: 11

Publications Under Grant by City:

  • Delhi witnessed a 17.37% rise (754 to 885)
  • Mumbai saw an increase of 26.96% (293 to 372)
  • Chennai observed a drop of 2.69% (519 to 505)
  • Kolkata reported a decline of 3.68% (190 to 183)

Of the 1,840 patent applications, the top contributing cities are:

  • Early publications: 32,506
  • Ordinary publications: 27,314

  • Total grants: 45,265 (Delhi: 18,748, Mumbai: 7,249, Chennai: 14,241, Kolkata: 5,027)
  • Applications examined: 20,686.

Industrial Design Statistics:

  • 558 designs registered this week, decreased from 535 the previous week.
  • Total designs registered in 2023: 23,526.
