Indian Patent and Design Statistics 2023: Insights for November 24 – December 1

In the latest data from the Official Journal of Patents and Designs, key insights on patent applications, publications, and grants from 24th of November to 1st December, 2023 were unveiled by BananaIP Counsels, a leading Intellectual Property firm in India.

Patent Statistics Overview:
  • Total patent applications this week: 1,971 (Early publications: 700, Ordinary publications: 1,271)
  • Patent examination increased by 22.9%, standing at 402.
  • Patent grants saw an increase of 26.7% with 3,166 applications.
Breakdown by City – Early Publications:
  • Delhi: Decreased by 57.9% (580 to 244)
  • Mumbai: drop by 99.7% (402 to 1)
  • Chennai: increased by 6.4% (389 to 414)
  • Kolkata: surged by 32.2% (31 to 41).
Ordinary Publications by City:
  • Delhi: 70.6% decrease (2752 to 807)
  • Mumbai: 54.5% decline (546 to 248)
  • Chennai: 14.7% decrease (217 to 185)
  • Kolkata: dropped by 67.7% (96 to 31)
First Examination Report (FER) Distribution:
  • Delhi: 170
  • Mumbai: 95
  • Chennai: 113
  • Kolkata: 24
Publications Under Grant by City:
  • Delhi witnessed a 21.3% rise (1,090 to 1.323)
  • Mumbai saw an increase of 52.2% (396 to 603)
  • Chennai observed an increase of 19.7% (759 to 909)
  • Kolkata reported an increase of 31.3% (252 to 331)
Applications Based on ‘Applicant City’:

Of the 1,971 patent applications, the top contributing cities are:

  • Delhi: 5

2023 Yearly Patent Overview (1st Jan – 1st Dec):
  • Early publications: 35,225
  • Ordinary publications: 33,573
  • Total applications published: 68,800
  • Total grants: 59,925 (Delhi: 25,263, Mumbai: 9,701, Chennai: 18,380, Kolkata: 6,581)
  • Applications examined: 22,884.
Industrial Design Statistics:
  • 417 designs registered this week, decreased from 443 the previous week.
  • Total designs registered in 2023: 26,585.
