Indian Patent and Design Statistics 2023: Insights for December 8 – 15

In the latest data from the Official Journal of Patents and Designs, key insights on patent applications, publications, and grants from 8th to 15th of December, 2023 were unveiled by BananaIP Counsels, a leading Intellectual Property firm in India.

Patent Statistics Overview:
  • Total patent applications this week: 2,424 (Early publications: 745, Ordinary publications: 1,679)
  • Patent examination decreased by 13.7%, standing at 314.
  • Patent grants saw an increase of 10.2% with 3,874 applications.
Breakdown by City – Early Publications:
  • Delhi: Decreased by 62.8% (140 to 52)
  • Mumbai: surged by 18.1% (171 to 202)
  • Chennai: increased by 391% (97 to 477)
  • Kolkata: rose by 27.2% (11 to 14).
Ordinary Publications by City:
  • Delhi: 12.03% drop (1030 to 906)
  • Mumbai: 20.1% decline (263 to 210)
  • Chennai: 403% rise (105 to 529)
  • Kolkata: increased by 61% (21 to 34)
First Examination Report (FER) Distribution:
  • Delhi: 126
  • Mumbai: 59
  • Chennai: 109
  • Kolkata: 20
Publications Under Grant by City:
  • Delhi witnessed a 6.7% rise (1,551 to 1,655)
  • Mumbai saw an increase of 36.4% (513 to 700)
  • Chennai observed an increase of 3.4% (1,086 to 1,123)
  • Kolkata reported an increase of 9.09% (363 to 396)

  • Applications examined: 23,562.
Industrial Design Statistics:
  • 426 designs registered this week, increased from 420 the previous week.
  • Total designs registered in 2023: 27,431.
