Indian Patent and Design Statistics 2023: Insights for December 1 – 8

In the latest data from the Official Journal of Patents and Designs, key insights on patent applications, publications, and grants from 1st to 8th of December, 2023 were unveiled by BananaIP Counsels, a leading Intellectual Property firm in India.

Patent Statistics Overview:
  • Total patent applications this week: 1,838 (Early publications: 419, Ordinary publications: 1,419)
  • Patent examination decreased by 9.4%, standing at 364.
  • Patent grants saw an increase of 10.9% with 3.513 applications.
Breakdown by City – Early Publications:
  • Delhi: Decreased by 42.6% (244 to 140)
  • Mumbai: surged by 17000% (1 to 171)
  • Chennai: decreased by 76.5% (414 to 97)
  • Kolkata: dropped by 73.1% (41 to 11).
Ordinary Publications by City:
  • Delhi: 27.6% increase (807 to 1030)
  • Mumbai: 6.04% rise (248 to 263)
  • Chennai: 43.2% decrease (185 to 105)
  • Kolkata: dropped by 32.2% (31 to 21)
First Examination Report (FER) Distribution:
  • Delhi: 144
  • Mumbai: 93
  • Chennai: 105
  • Kolkata: 22
Publications Under Grant by City:
  • Delhi witnessed a 17.2% rise (1,323 to 1,551)
  • Mumbai saw a decrease of 14.9% (603 to 513)
  • Chennai observed an increase of 19.4% (909 to 1,086)
  • Kolkata reported an increase of 9.6% (331 to 363)

  • Applications examined: 23,248.
Industrial Design Statistics:
  • 420 designs registered this week, increased from 417 the previous week.
  • Total designs registered in 2023: 27,005.
