DPIIT launches exclusive IPR website and mobile application for Startups and SME’s

The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) launched a website called ‘L2Pro IP e-learning Platform’ and a mobile application called ‘L2Pro India Mobile App’ on 14th October 2019. The e-learning platform and the application have been developed by the Cell for IPR Promotion and Management (CIPAM) in collaboration with Qualcomm Inc. and National Law University (NLU), Delhi. Learn to Protect or L2Pro has been exclusively designed to provide assistance to Startups and SME’s and help them in understanding Intellectual Property Rights. It will also aid is helping them utilize, enforce, integrate IP into their business models. At the launch of the website and the application, a spokesperson said that L2Pro has already been implemented in countries like Germany, UK, France and Italy. Research Institutions as well as other organizations are said to have been benefited in a number of ways.

L2Pro India has specially been customized to match the needs of its users in the country. The e-learning platform contains 11 modules and 3 different levels – Basic, Intermediate and Advanced. The modules contain text as well as animated videos that explain concepts in a simple and clear manner. Users are also presented with links for additional resources and can also take a quiz to evaluate their learning. The mobile app is currently available on Android and iOS.

Hike India among top 3 patent filers in India, launches Patent Program

Domestic messaging platform – Hike has been recognized as one of the top 3 patent applicants in the field of IT, for the year 2017-18. By filing 66 patents in the year 2017-2018, Hike India featured among other tech giants including Wipro and TCS.

In addition to being featured among the Top 5, Hike India has also made it to the headlines for launching a program called the Hike Patent Program. The objective of the program is to provide incentives to Hike’s employees in the form of rewards and also provide legal assistance to patent filers. The objective of the company is to create an internal ecosystem that harbors inventions in the field of AI. Through the program, Hike will offer rewards and grants to patent filers up to the amount of 60,000/- INR. Vice President, Ankur Narang was quoted as stating that, “Hike is driven by innovation and we as a company are constantly looking to raise the bar on inventing. This has led us to become one of the top 3 patent filers in the country, to accelerate this culture even further we launched the Hike Patent Program.”

NITI Aayog publishes India Innovation Index 2019

Government think-tank, NITI Aayog has published the first ever Indian Innovation Index 2019 on 17th October 2019. The Index was prepared after examining 29 States and seven Union Territories in respect of their ability to create novel inventions.  Ranks were then awarded based on their performance in recognizing new opportunities, overcoming challenges, embracing innovation and simultaneously enforcing government policies.

Highlights of the India Innovation Index 2019:

  • Karnataka Ranks No. 1, being the most innovative state in the country.
  • Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Telangana and Haryana follow by securing the 2nd, 3rd, 4thand 5th rank, respectively.
  • The country’s most literate state, Kerala, secures 6th position
  • Bihar and Jharkhand, falling in the 16thand 17th position are the least innovative states
  • New Delhi Ranks No. 1 among Union Territories followed by Chandigarh and Goa.
  • Sikkim Ranks No. 1 being the most innovative North-Eastern State followed by Himachal Pradesh.

India-US Dialogue on Intellectual Property held in New Delhi

Global Innovation Policy Centre (GIPC) and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) hosted the second-edition of the India-US Dialogue in New Delhi on 17th October 2019. The event was held in collaboration with US-India Business Council (USIBC). The objective of the event was to increase cooperation on matters related to IP between the two innovation savvy nations. The event attracted participants from the Indo-US business field as well as officials from DPIIT, Indian Patent Office and the USPTO. The IP Dialogue named – Opportunities for US-India Collaboration established a platform for discussions on topics like transfer of technology, IP system in India, Protection and enforcement of IP rights. Experts from both the countries shared ideas and formulated strategies to overcome obstacle in the field. Further, GIPC and the Indian government published a joint project named – A Guide to Protecting Trade Secrets. The guide is expected to useful to Startups and SME’s.

RINL signs MoA with NRDC

Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL) also known as Vizag Steel recently signed an agreement with the National Research Development Corporation (NRDC), an organization that functions under the supervision of the Union Ministry of Science and Technology. The agreements between the two organizations will enable RNIL to receive assistance in filing patent, design and trademark and copyright applications in India as well as other countries. Assistance in respect of establishing licensing deals with other companies will also be provided by NRDC.

Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd, also known as Vizag Steel, is a Public steel producer based in Visakhapatnam.

The Centre for Intellectual Property Rights (CIPR), Anna University in association with Anna University Regional Campus, Coimbatore & Thiagarajar College of Engineering, Madurai is jointly organizing a “Certificate Course on Effective Patent Search and Drafting – 2019 (PAT DRAFT 2019)” from 18th to 22nd November 2019 at Anna University Regional Campus, Coimbatore, 25th to 29th November 2019 at Thiagarajar College of Engineering, Madurai and 2nd to 6th December 2019 at College of Engineering Guindy, Anna University, Chennai – 600 025.

Mr. Gaurav Mishra delivers talk on patent law and patent searching at Mount Carmel College, Bangalore

Mr. Gaurav Mishra, IP Manager at BananaIP Counsels delivered a talk on the 19th of October 2019 on the basics of patent law and patent searching to the faculty and students of Mount Carmel College, Bangalore. In his talk Gaurav emphasized on the importance of patent law in the field of science and technology and the importance of undertaking or performing a patent search prior before investing time and effort into research idea. WIPO releases World Intellectual Property Indicators 2019

On 16th October 2019, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) released the World Intellectual Property Indicators 2019 report, in Geneva. According to the Report, Asia takes the lead with the highest number of patent, design and trademark applications by accounting for more than two thirds of all filings. China leads the table of countries by having filed the highest number of patent applications i.e., 1.54 million, followed by USA with 597,141 applications. In the year 2018, 3.3 million patent applications have been filed marking an increase of 5.2%. The Annual Report also throws light on the number of trademark and design filings. While trademark filings rose to over 14 million, industrial designs reached the 1 million mark. The top five IP offices i.e., China, USA, Japan, Republic of Korea and EPO have collectively filed 85.3% of the total number of patent applications. Director, Francis Gurry said, “Asia continues to outpace other regions in filing activity for patents, trademarks, industrial designs and other intellectual property rights that are at the center of the global economy. China alone accounted for almost half of all the world’s patent filings, with India also registering impressive increases. Asia has become a global hub for innovation.”
