Summary
The NSRCEL event at IIM Bangalore focused on the importance of intellectual property for startups and included presentations by experts such as Dr. Kalyan C. Kankanala. Participants learned about IP frameworks, valuation, and practical steps for IP protection, alongside case studies from business leaders. Downloadable materials and checklists were made available to help startups effectively manage their IP assets. The event received highly positive feedback for its informative and structured approach. NSRCEL continues to promote entrepreneurship through such knowledge-sharing initiatives.
The programme organised by NSRCEL, IIMB’s entrepreneurship cell, on 5 September 2015, drew considerable interest from the start-up community. More than five hundred aspiring entrepreneurs registered, and close to two hundred attended on campus, with others joining the event online via webcast.
Proceedings
The event opened with an introduction to NSRCEL’s start-ups series and the cell’s role in promoting entrepreneurship. Dr. Kalyan C. Kankanala then delivered the keynote address, speaking on the value of intellectual property for a start-up and the steps a start-up should take to make the best of its IP assets. He also provided a framework to help start-ups plan their IP investments.
The three special guests then gave insights on their respective topics. Mr. Madhavan, MD and CEO of PEPS Industries, spoke on the value of IP for a manufacturing company and described how intellectual assets had enabled him to stop competitors and improve the company’s valuation. Mr. Ashish from Linksmart presented on the role of patents in generating licensing revenues, using his own inventions and patents as examples. Mr. Murthy from Intel drew on his experience as in-house counsel to explain the factors that large companies consider when acquiring patents and start-ups, and outlined the steps involved in a due diligence exercise.
Dr. Kalyan then opened the floor for questions from participants, directing them to the appropriate special guest and providing clarifications where required.
