Overview

The Indian Patent Office maintains four regional offices located at Kolkata, Chennai, Mumbai, and Delhi, with the Kolkata office serving as the head office. The patent system is regarded as a key mechanism for stimulating industrial growth and competitive innovation among inventors and industrialists.

The number of patent applications filed in 2013-14 was 42,951, compared with 43,674 in 2012-13, representing a marginal decrease of 1.65 per cent. Of the 42,951 applications filed in 2013-14, those filed by Indian applicants numbered 10,941 — approximately 10.4 per cent more than the 9,911 filed by Indian applicants in the previous year. Maharashtra held the top position among Indian states in terms of patent filings in 2013-14, as it had for the preceding eleven years, followed by Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Delhi, and Andhra Pradesh.
