Overview

The table below presents statistics on patent filings, grants, examinations, and revenue generated in India over the decade from 2003-04 to 2013-14.

Intellectual property is an essential component of a country’s development. Intellectual property rights confer exclusive rights on creators and inventors who contribute to society through their work across different fields of knowledge. Intellectual property systems not only advance the collective knowledge of society but also promote its dissemination. The Indian intellectual property ecosystem underwent significant transformation in the past several decades.

During 2013-14, 42,951 patent applications were filed, representing a marginal decrease of 1.65 per cent compared with the previous year.

With the exception of the years 2009-10 and 2013-14, patent filings increased year-on-year. Patent grants were highest in 2007-08 and 2008-09. During 2013-14, the Patent Office generated total revenue of Rs.189.61 crore, which has shown continuous growth since 2009-10.
