Overview
The Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) has become the first business school in India to offer Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) through a programme called IIMBx. The programme is designed to provide quality education free of cost to a wide range of learners, enabling them to develop managerial skills through courses designed by IIMB faculty.
Rationale and Scope
The initiative addresses the challenge faced by students competing for limited seats in tier-one institutions. Physical and financial constraints prevent many qualified candidates from accessing quality higher education. The IIMBx programme aims to address this gap. As stated by Dr. Sushil Vachani, Director of IIMB, the courses are aimed at creating a social impact and advancing learning through technology.
The programme plans to introduce ten courses in its first year. IIMB has also indicated plans to make course content available in regional language transcripts to improve accessibility across India.
Inaugural Courses
Three inaugural courses were announced for launch in mid-2015. The course on Statistics for Business was scheduled to start on 7th July 2015. This was to be followed by Innovation and IT Management on 21st July 2015 and Introduction to Operations Management on 18th August 2015. The courses are taught by IIMB faculty and use video lessons, quizzes, assignments, and discussion forums to make learning interactive. Continuous assessment is incorporated to monitor each student’s progress. Upon completion of a course, students receive a free certificate; a verified certificate is available for a fee of $25.
Partnership with edX
IIMBx is built on the edX platform, a non-profit initiative of Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). edX was established in 2012 and has since provided access to free education through partnerships with institutions including Stanford University, Harvard University, and the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay.
