Karnataka High Court to form IP Division: Sub-Committee notified

Summary

The Karnataka High Court has issued a notification on 20th June 2024 regarding the formation of an Intellectual Property Division. This move aligns Karnataka with other High Courts such as Delhi, Bombay, Madras, and Kolkata that have established similar divisions. A sub-committee comprising the Registrar (Judicial) and Dr. Arul George Scaria, with assistance from a Law Clerk, has been tasked to draft rules for the new division. The draft rules will be presented to the High Court and the District Judiciary Rules Committee for approval. In a notification dated 20th June, 2024, the High Court of Karnataka has notified its steps towards the establishment of the Intellectual Property (IP) Division. This notification aligns with the establishment of an IP Division by the High Courts of Delhi, Bombay, Madras and Kolkata.

The notification states that:

  • A sub-committee will be established to prepare draft rules for the establishment of an Intellectual Property Division in the High Court of Karnataka.
  • The said sub-committee will consist of the Registrar (Judicial), High Court of Karnataka, Bengaluru, and Dr. Arul George Scaria, Associate Professor of Law, NLSU, Bengaluru.
  • The sub-committee will be assisted by Mr. Sourav M., Law Clerk
  • The sub-committee will present the draft rules before the Hon’ble High Court of Karnataka and the District Judiciary Rules Committee for approval.

 

The notification doesn’t mention any deadline or timeline for the sub-committee to submit the draft rules for approval.
