Geographical Indications: Framework and Significance

A Geographical Indication (GI) identifies goods as originating from a particular place, where a given quality, reputation, or other characteristic of those goods is essentially attributable to their geographical origin. Geographical Indication protection is regarded as an important legal tool for the protection of goods originating in developing countries. Registration enables agricultural producers to achieve the consumer recognition necessary to establish a reputation based on geographical origin.

The European Union administers three schemes for Geographical Indication and Traditional Specialties: Protected Designation of Origin (PDO), Protected Geographical Indication (PGI), and Traditional Specialty Guaranteed (TSG). These schemes protect the names of quality agricultural products and foodstuffs, including wines, cheeses, hams, sausages, seafood, olives, beers, and regional breads, fruits, raw meats, and vegetables.
