The recognition adds to Kerala’s existing portfolio of GI-protected agricultural products, which includes Palakkadan matta rice, Vazhakkulam pineapple, Pokkali rice, the Wayanadan scented rice varieties Gandhakasala and Jeerakasala, and Central Travancore jiggery.
Characteristics and Geographic Origin
The variety originates from the erstwhile Chengazhikode village in Thrissur and is distinguished by its appearance and taste. It is cultivated in the Chowannur, Puzhakkal, Wadakkancherry, Pazhayannur, and Ollukkara block panchayats of Thrissur district. The Changalikodan banana has a sugar content of 26 to 30 per cent and an acidity of 0.31 to 0.60 per cent, and can remain fresh for seven to nine days after harvest.
Cultural Significance and Market Value
The variety is closely associated with the Onam festival, during which it is offered as Kazhchakula to the deity at temples across Kerala, including the Guruvayur Sree Krishna Temple. This ceremonial connection generates high seasonal demand, with farmers selling a bunch for Rs.1,500 to 3,000 depending on the appearance and overall quality of the bunch; prices for particularly fine bunches may go considerably higher.
