Indian Patent Statistics
A total of 676 patent applications have been published in the 47th issue of the patent journal. Out of the 676 applications, 97 applications account for early publications while 579 applications account for ordinary publications or publications occurring after the 18-month period. A total of 138 applications have been granted this week thereby marking a decrease of about 15.33% in total grants as compared to the preceding week.

Invention 1 – INTERNATIONAL MARITIME BORDER SECURITY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

Abstract: “A country must understand its
borders and is vulnerable. There arises difficulty in identifying the maritime borders, which is the main reason for this cross border cruelty. Managing the border is difficult for several reasons. Uncertain borders not only nurture bilateral tensions but also enable cross border infiltration, illegal migration and smuggling. Using RSSI Zigbee the boats can be monitored continuously by the Indian Navy based on the received signals. According to the received signal the boat/ships can be located and an alert is given. to the fishermen through APR Voice Alert. Even after that if they cross the border, the engine turns OFF automatically and can be restarted by the concerned authorities. Along with this we add obstacle detection (ultrasonic sensor is used for prototype) which detects any obstacle and raises alarm accordingly. This can avoid collision of boats/ships. The subject of our innovation is Safety and Security. Hence the main objective of this project is to meet the common challenges of facilitating legitimate movement of people and goods while maintaining secure border and meeting national legal requirements. Abstract: “Traffic congestion caused by vehicle is an alarming problem at a global scale and it has been growing exponentially. Car parking problem is a major contributor and has been, still a major problem with increasing vehicle size in the luxurious segment and confined parking spaces in urban cities. Searching for a parking space is a routine (and often frustrating) activity for many people in cities around the world. This search burns about one million barrels of the worlds oil every day. As the global population continues to urbanize, without a well-planned, convenience-driven retreat from the car these problems will worsen. The 10T is continually monitoring the status of the car parking. Abstract: “Increasing oil exploration, production and transport in Arctic waters will increase the risk of an oil spill occurring in cold and ice- infested waters. The mechanical oil spill recovery equipment currently used in warmer waters was not designed to collect much more viscous oils, or oil-ice mixtures. The presence of ice crystals in oil emulsions affects the adhesion processes between an oil slick and the surface of an oleophilic skimmer and- prevents oil from being efficiently recovered. Indian Patent Updates
Venkaiah Naidu emphasizes on the importance of the patent system at 18th General Assembly of the Asian Patent Attorneys Association
The 18th General Assembly of the Asian Patent Attorneys Association and the Council Meeting, was recently held in New Delhi between the 17th and 21st of November, 2018. The Assembly was inaugurated by the Vice President, Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu, who also delivered the opening address. The Vice President, highlighted the consequence that technological development can have on the country. He explained that the ultimate boost which the evolving economy needs, is a strong IP Regime, like the National IPR Policy that is already in effect. As the potential lies in intangible assets, the patent system must contain provisions that protect one’s rights and that which safeguards the invention, without either of these, no patent system can be effective. He further stated that striking a balance between privileges and duties was key. India, being a party to the TRIP’s Agreement and the WTO, means that it’s laws are already in compliance with that of other countries. Lastly, he said that the government was taking the initiative to create a healthy network that encouraged innovation in the fields of IT, Biotechnology, Pharmaceuticals and Electronics.
VTU to start online certification course on IPR
Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), along with Origiin IP Academy will soon start an online course on Intellectual Property for engineering students. The course has been specially curated by IP experts, academicians, IP Attorneys and other professionals in the industry. It aims is to equip young engineers with the knowledge of IP Rights in order to them to patent their projects on completion. Importance of IPR Policy, framework of patent laws and its infringement, are some of the topics that have been included. An official from the University said that course will not be a compulsory subject, and will be offered as an optional. The Course itself, will consist of 10 modules which must be completed within 3 months, after which, an exam will be held.

Motorola scores second victory against Hytera Communications
Motorola Solutions, Inc. which had filed a suit against Chinese corporation Hytera Communications, the parent company and its subsidiary, Hytera Mobilfunk, in Germany has scored a victory for the second time against the company. In a patent infringement suit filed against the company, Motorola alleged that Hytera had infringed its European Patent No: EP 2 342 851 B1. The Regional Court of Düsseldorf in Germany has held that Hytera had, in fact, infringed Motorola’s patented invention and has awarded an injunction to Hytera, prohibiting it from offering the invention for sale, in Germany. The Court further imposed another injunction barring it from proposing and supplying products that are similar to the patented method.
Broadcom and Volkswagen to settle patent dispute
Broadcom and Volkswagen have reportedly agreed to settle a patent infringement dispute involving 18 of Broadcom’s patents. Broadcom had earlier this month alleged that Volkswagen infringed on 18 of its patents and had filed a suit soon after seeking an injunction against Volkswagen from manufacturing certain models along with $1.1 billion in damages.
Broadcom which has over 25,000 patents in its portfolio has filed suits against other major companies like Qualcomm and Toyota Motors.
