In 2015, we tried to provide you with a variety of blogs and articles relating to every aspect of intellectual property. In 2016 also we resolve to carry forward our endeavor to bring forth the latest happenings in the world of intellectual property.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In this article, we will discuss about the latest change that has been introduced by the Office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trademarks. This change is regarding the format of the numbering system of Patent Applications as well as Request for Examination that are to be filed in the various Patent Offices across the country. This change has been implemented for all applications filed since the 1<sup>st<\/sup> of January 2016.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Lets peek into the new numbering formats.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><u>NEW SYSTEM OF NUMBERING PATENT APPLICATIONS IN INDIA:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>FORMAT<\/strong>: <strong>YYYYJTNNNNNN<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Where,<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><strong>\u201cYYYY\u201d <\/strong>denotes the Year of Filing the application<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cJ\u201d <\/strong>denotes the Jurisdiction under which the application is filed. \u201dJ\u201d will vary as 1 if the application is filed in Delhi, 2 for Mumbai, 3 for Kolkata and 4 for applications filed in the Chennai patent office.<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cT\u201d <\/strong>indicates the Type of Application that is filed. \u201cT\u201d will vary as follows:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><strong>1 <\/strong>for ordinary application<\/li>\n<li><strong>2 <\/strong>for Ordinary Divisional<\/li>\n<li><strong>3 <\/strong>for ordinary Patent of Addition<\/li>\n<li><strong>4 <\/strong>for Convention<\/li>\n<li><strong>5 <\/strong>for Convention- Divisional<\/li>\n<li><strong>6 <\/strong>for Convention \u2013Patent of Addition<\/li>\n<li><strong>7 <\/strong>for PCT NP<\/li>\n<li><strong>8 <\/strong>for PCT NP Divisional<\/li>\n<li><strong>9 <\/strong>for PCT NP \u2013 Patent of Addition<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><strong>\u201cNNNNNN\u201d <\/strong>represents a continuous six-digit serial number which is applicable in case of all patent offices in India.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <strong>\u201cNNNNNN\u201d <\/strong>series of applications shall be unique and are to be incremented in proper sequence for all the four patent offices in order of their filing. The patent application number should also be accompanied by the date of application in the following format:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>YYYY\/MM\/DD<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>Where,<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>\u201cYYYY\u201d denotes the year of filing<\/li>\n<li>\u201cMM\u201d denotes Month<\/li>\n<li>\u201cDD\u201d denotes month of filing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><u>NEW NUMBERING SYSTEM FOR REQUEST FOR EXAMINATION:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><strong>Request for Examination u\/r 24B(1)(i)(Normal):<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">FORMAT: <strong>RYYYYJNNNNNN<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Where-<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>\u201cR\u201d denotes Request For Examination u\/r 24B(1)(i)<\/li>\n<li>\u201cYYYY\u201d denotes four digit Year of Filing the application<\/li>\n<li>\u201cJ\u201d denotes Jurisdiction for Patent Application against which Request of examination has been Filed<\/li>\n<li>\u201cNNNNNN\u201d Denotes 6 digit common continuous running serial number applicable for all Patent offices in India<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify;\" start=\"2\">\n<li><strong>Request for Examination u\/r 20 (4)(ii)(Express):<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">FORMAT: <strong>XYYYYJNNNNNN<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Where,<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>\u201cX\u201d denotes Request for Examination u\/r 20 (4) (ii)<\/li>\n<li>\u201cYYYY\u201d denotes four digit fixed length Year of Filing<\/li>\n<li>\u201cJ\u201d denotes Jurisdiction of Patent Application against which Request has been filed<\/li>\n<li>\u201cNNNNNN\u201d denotes six digit fixed length common continuous running serial number applicable for all Patent offices across India.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Both the SERIAL NUMBERS u\/r 24B (1) (i) and u\/r 20 (4) (ii) shall be common and shall be accompanied by the date of request of examination in the following format:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>YYYY\/MM\/DD<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Where,<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>\u201cYYYY\u201d DENOTES \u201cYear of Filing\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cMM\u201d denotes \u201cMonth of Filing\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cDD\u201d denotes \u201cDate of Filing\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">These are the new formats that have been introduced across all patent offices in India.
