The Changalikodan banana variety, a Nendran-type banana native to the Thrissur district of Kerala, has received Geographical Indication (GI) status. The announcement was made officially at a public event by the Thrissur district panchayat president C.C. Sreekumar, who also unveiled the GI logo for the variety. The recognition adds to Kerala’s existing portfolio of GI-protected agricultural products, which includes Palakkadan matta rice, Vazhakkulam pineapple, Pokkali rice, the Wayanadan scented rice varieties Gandhakasala and Jeerakasala, and Central Travancore jiggery.<\/p>\n
The variety originates from the erstwhile Chengazhikode village in Thrissur and is distinguished by its appearance and taste. It is cultivated in the Chowannur, Puzhakkal, Wadakkancherry, Pazhayannur, and Ollukkara block panchayats of Thrissur district. The Changalikodan banana has a sugar content of 26 to 30 per cent and an acidity of 0.31 to 0.60 per cent, and can remain fresh for seven to nine days after harvest.<\/p>\n
The variety is closely associated with the Onam festival, during which it is offered as Kazhchakula to the deity at temples across Kerala, including the Guruvayur Sree Krishna Temple. This ceremonial connection generates high seasonal demand, with farmers selling a bunch for Rs.1,500 to 3,000 depending on the appearance and overall quality of the bunch; prices for particularly fine bunches may go considerably higher.<\/p>\n
The grant of GI protection is expected to assist producers in expanding their market for the variety, as well as providing the legal protection necessary to prevent misuse of the designation by producers outside the recognised growing region.<\/p>\n
