India has long been associated with intellectual endeavour and inventive thinking. Freedom, understood broadly, encompasses not only liberty from external constraint but also the freedom of thought that drives discovery and creation. As Christopher Hitchens observed in Letters to a Young Contrarian: “The essence of the independent mind lies not in what it thinks, but in how it thinks.”

Flag Design Patents

In the spirit of the occasion, the following flag design patents offer an illustration of how intellectual property protection has been sought for national and decorative flag designs.

USD46525 — Home Flag Design (1914)

In 1914, inventor Zed Hetzel Copp designed and patented (USD46525) a new, original, and ornamental design for a home flag. The specification describes the flag as having an upper part consisting of thirteen stars with alternating red and white stripes on either side, a bottom white field with a Roman cross in red, and the right field red and left field blue.

USD40336 — Tricolour Flag Design (1909)

In 1909, inventor Charles Y. Turner designed and patented (USD40336) a tricolour flag consisting of three equal horizontal stripes of Nassau orange, white, and light blue. In the centre stripe were the initials H.F. in red, flanked on each side by a branch of laurel in its natural colour.

USD35985 — Decorative Flag Design (1902)

In 1902, A. Reed Conner patented (USD35985) a rectangular flag design featuring triangular corners of a contrasting colour such as purple. A diamond-shaped space occupies the centre of the flag, across which alternate stripes of yellow and white extend diagonally. A pictorial representation of an aristocratic figure occupies the centre of the diamond-shaped space, with a chicken at the lower corner, an opossum at the right-hand corner, and a watermelon at the left-hand corner.

Flag Hoisting Technology

External Halyard System

The external halyard (rope) system is the most widely used technique for hoisting flags. The flag hoisting device consists of a pole erected upward from the ground, with a revolving pulley at the upper end. The flag is attached to the rope using swivel-type snap hooks. As the rope runs down the outside of the flagpole, the flag can be raised and lowered.

Internal Halyard System

The internal halyard system routes a highly flexible stainless steel cable through the interior of the flagpole shaft. The cable is attached to a gearless positive locking winch that allows the flag to be displayed at any position on the pole. The cable is routed over two pulleys inside a revolving truck and terminates in a neoprene ball block to prevent jamming at the pole’s top. A beaded sling encircles the pole and keeps the flag tight against it. A neoprene-coated counterweight allows for proper lowering of the flag. A removable winch handle operates the system through an access hole in the pole, which is secured by a flush-hinged door with a cylinder lock.

Internal Cam System

The internal cam system is a more cost-effective variant of the internal halyard system. A cam cleat replaces the winch and the door is removable to allow access for operating the halyard. Standard nylon rope is used in place of stainless steel cable, and a stationary truck replaces the revolving truck. This system is suitable for poles of five inches diameter and above and is not recommended for poles of 35 feet and above.

Disclaimer

This article is for general information and does not constitute legal advice.
