In what may be the next big patent battle, Yahoo has recently threatened to sue Facebook over use of some of its patents. Following talks with Facebook, Yahoo has issued a statement by insisting that the social networking site either enter into a licensing agreement or that it will be compelled to move forward unilaterally to protect its rights.
The patents in question include some of the first awarded to Yahoo. It also gained a significant number of patents from the purchase of Overture Services, a search-advertising company in the year 2003. Overture Services had earlier sued companies like Google over patent issues. Analysts are already associating such acts of Yahoo to troll-like behaviour.
It is also interesting to note that Yahoo’s patent claims come in the light of Facebook’s announcement regarding an initial public offering that could value the company at about $100 billion.
